Trekking in Himachal India- Churdhar/Churchandani Peak Trek

Sarain – Chur Dhar (Chur Chandni) Peak Trek

ATTAIN THE GLORY OF STANDING ATOP THE HIGHEST PEAK IN HIMACHAL

Situated in district Sirmaur of Himachal Pradesh is Choor Dhar, once known as Choor-Chandni Dhar or the bangles of the snow ridge, holds attraction for its picturesque locales as well as its association with mythology. Below the summit, which is the highest peak in Himachal, is the door-roofed, single-Storied, square temple of Srigul Mahadev with a lingam, dedicated to Shiva (Chooreshwar Mahadev). Pilgrims sing and dance at night during the Navratras fair in this ancient temple. Trekkers tread over small glaciers on their way to the windblown Churdhar summit, which has moderate to heavy snowfall (average of 33 feet snow). Often the Srigul temple gets buried under it. Legend has it that Bhima’s grandson Barbareek witnessed the Mahabharata war from this summit which rests at 11965 feet above the sea level. The Shiv temple (also known as Shrigul Mahadev) at Churdhar is accessible only from May to November each year. Heavy snowfall during the remaining part of the year forces the closure of this temple. In Churr Dhaar temple there is not yet any idol established nor worship is done. It may be said that once Maharaja Shirgul visited Chur dhar and made a foundation of this temple. According to folk stories it is described and considered that ascetic Adi Shankaracharya on his pilgrimage through Badrinath and Kedarnath came to Dharmshala by only a single route that was chur dhar and he might have establish linga here. Unfortunately there is no written proof of its existence. Although this fact can be explained with full faith that it is established in between two water streams known as Ganga and yamuna. It is a place where pilgrims bathe and wash away their sins, purify their souls and give gratitude to lord shiva by pouring water on linga.

On a clear sunny day, you can be rewarded with a view of the Badrinath and Kedarnath shrines, Gangetic plains, the Sutlej river and hills of Shimla and Chakrata. Atop the Churdhar summit lie the lingams of Shiva and Kali, where once goat and sheep were sacrificed. Devotees hoist flags and make offerings here.

SARAIN: A base for the toughest but most sought after routes to Churdhar, Sarain is a small town hamlet. churdhar_trek_4TREK HIGHLIGHTS

The peak is one of the famous and favorite trekking destinations in northern Indian Himalayas. Also a place of great faith and wonders for nearby locals of most of Himachal the route to Churdhar is well defined with most of the trek trail paved with stone. The Wildlife Sanctuary forest with its scenic beauty, the chirping of the birds and cool, fresh air enlivens one with energy and enthusiasm throughout the trek keeping the trekker filled with increasing optimism and higher engagement with every step further. From the temple, it takes half an hour climb through rocky terrain on the west side to reach the peak. For almost six months, the north face of the mountain is snow clad, and below that the flanks are covered with verdant forests. The trail becomes disconnected from outer world since November to March. It could be 3 to 33 ft of snow on this trail during this period. The Churdhar peak is only marginally higher than the long east-west ridgeline separating the rivers Tons and Giri.
